Introduction to Computers using Vista

SeniorNet’s most popular class for beginners is newly revised for Windows Vista. Learn the basics of using your computer, “surfing” the Internet, using e-mail, managing files and folders, and using word processing and spreadsheet applications with Microsoft Word and Excel 2007.

Fee: $70

A friendly introduction to computers for beginners. Learn the basics of using your computer with Windows XP - “surfing” the Internet, using e-mail, managing files and folders, word processing with Microsoft Word 2003 and spreadsheet and database applications using Microsoft Works.

Fee: $70

Using Microsoft Excel 2007

Learn how a spreadsheet can make it easy to create and maintain a budget, monitor investments, checking account activity, or create a club treasurers report. You will also learn how to build and edit worksheets and create formulas which automatically update your numbers. This course uses Microsoft Excel 2007 spreadsheet software. Prerequisite:: Basic computer skills.

Using Microsoft Word 2007

Learn to use the Microsoft’s latest word processing tool in this newly revised course. Word 2007, part of Microsoft Office 2007’s suite of applications has many new features. A new “Ribbon” replaces traditional menus and toolbars, giving you quick access to all the major features of the application making document editing easy. Prerequisite: Basic computer skills including some experience with word processing.

Using Microsoft Word (2003 & earlier)

Learn to open, copy, save & print documents, type a letter, edit & spell-check text, make documents interesting using color, bold, underlining, different fonts, tabs, custom page layouts & formats. Advanced features you’ll learn include: tables, lists, footnotes, drawing insertion, find / replace, and form letters & mail merge. Prerequisite: Basic computer skills including some experience with word processing.

Fee: $75

Take Control of Windows Vista

Learn the major parts of Windows Vista, Microsoft’s newest operating system. Learn to use Vista’s new features along with how to organize files into folders, find files on your computer; customize the Start Menu, Desktop and Taskbar; add/remove programs & update Windows; optimally keep data on your hard disk; add/remove hardware; and protect your data/do backups. It’s taught using Windows Vista, but much of the material covered is applicable to Windows XP. Prerequisite: Basic computer skills.

Take Control of Windows XP

Learn the major parts of the operating system, how to organize files into folders and find files anywhere on the computer; customize your Start Menu, Desktop and Taskbar; add/remove programs & update Windows; optimally keep data on your hard disk; add/remove hardware; and protect your data/do backups. It’s taught using Windows XP, but much of the material covered is applicable to Windows 98 and Windows ME. Prerequisite: Basic computer skills.

Introduction to Digital Photography

Whether you have been taking pictures for years or would like to learn what all this digital “fuss” is about, this course is for you! Get hands-on practice taking good digital pictures, manipulating them in your camera, transferring them to a computer and enhancing, printing, distributing, and organizing them electronically. Prerequisite: Basic computer skills.

Learn the basic features of this sophisticated image-editing software. Included are the Photo Organizer and the four editors, Fix, Guided Edit, Quick Fix, and Full Editor. Basic tools are taught to easily edit common photo faults. Lessons will include color correction, blemish and unwanted object removal, adding text and graphics, layer techniques and printing options. Prerequisites: Intermediate computer skills with experience in word processing and digital photography.

Internet and E-Mail

Read, create, send, & save e-mail messages & attachments using web-site software and Outlook Express. Create & edit the address book provided by Outlook Express. Protect your privacy and keep your computer secure when searching or exploring popular places on the World Wide Web. Learn how to download information from the web to your computer, and to safely make purchases online. Prerequisite: Basic computer skills.

Fee: $75

Projects & Problem Solving with Photoshop Elements 6

Use your own photos to create projects, restore damaged photos, and edit problem photos. The two projects are a computer scrapbook page and a photo fold-over card. Photo restoration will include color correction and tear repair. The last lesson will address common photo problems. Prerequisite: Photoshop Elements experience. You will need to bring your photos to class on a flash drive. The instructor will contact you before class starts with more information. This is a 4 lesson course.

Google

Google is a powerful, but simple, Internet search engine that allows you to search billions of web pages. This course gives you a thorough, but concise, explanation of how to productively use its features. You will use practical examples that demonstrate how you can locate the information you seek. If it’s out there, you can find it. Don’t search, Google! Prerequisite: Basic computer and Internet Skills. This is a 4 lesson course.

The SeniorNet Learning Center is open to all adults 50+ from Noon – 2PM  Monday, through Friday (subject to change).  Use our computers to surf the Internet, send e-mail and enhance your skills with assistance from our excellent coaches. Neither SeniorNet nor JCC membership is required.  Open to the public!

Ask the Pros!
In addition, on Wednesday's only (during May and June) we offer "Ask the Pros" sessions where current SeniorNet members and current students can receive expert help with any computer issue.  Try and stump our experts with any computer problem.  This is very difficult to do. 

JCC non-members welcome!
